New Jersey Nets' Marcus Williams and mascot, Sly, record a promotional spot, Monday, Oct. 1, 2007, at Net's NBA basketball media day n East Rutherford, N.J.

As we scour the entire region for a suitable backup to backup Marcus Williams, he makes an appearance here during Media Day which gives us hope that he would return sooner than we thought he would.

But no…it’s all a mirage, check this out.

Williams will have a screw inserted into his foot. He said he should be in a cast for about 10 days, then a boot and then he’ll be in the pool. He hopes to be on the court in five weeks so he can be back playing by December. It’s possible, though, that it will be later in December if it’s 6-8 weeks before he can start doing court work.

Way off from the out for two weeks claim, this is like out for a month or so, but how are we going to find theat replacement for him? Jerrod, from the previous post suggested Gary Payton but come on dude, although someone said he isn’t returning to the Heat, it’s not formal yet and, if Paytons coming over here, his presence would no doubt be positive on the squad and on Marcus, but once Marcus returns from his injury, where s he getting his minutes? I hate to say this but, I would prefer a younger dude to run backup duties in order to spur his growth rather than relying on a 38 year old eating away minutes from my great hope, that’s why we have to look elsewhere.

Darrell Armstrong is another option but please, although he’s still capable of playing but he’s 39 already, don’t you have better things to do? Dan Dickau is off to the Clippers, who already have a stackload full of point guards. I think guys like Daniel Ewing are worth a look as well, although he isn’t a pure point guard, two years trying to be one surely would be a boost somehow

We’ll have to see if Eddie Gill or even Mateen Cleaves impresses during training camp becasue there would be a spot or two up for grabs since Mile Ilic is already a flop project and is a waiver in progess; and Bernard Robinson would probably be cut if Allan Houston decides that the Nets is his town.

But if all of that fails, we go back to Vince Carter, why? have to do some explanation here, It won’t be reasonable to sign another guy who’s going to eat up minutes from Marcus (I wonder how many times I’ve said that), and if Allan Houston really is signing with the Nets, it paves the way for Vince Carter to step on backup point guard duties, but why do I insist on Carter? well because one thing Vince cares about except for his point average, is his apg numbers.

You see it goes like this, Houston is not in the mix yet, but if VC slides over to PG and Kidd gets a rest, Boki can play the 2 or Antoine Wright, and when Kidd comes back in Carter could get his rest before coming back out to his natural position. And if we keep it that way, both of them could still play 30+ minutes per night, but it also means that VC is changing positions between the 1 and 2, which could be good and also bad at the same time.

But it will all come down to Allan Houston’s decision to whether sign with the Nets or not, because if he does, it’s either Bernard Robinson gets waived or Carter at the point. and if he doesn’t it’s still the same actually.
